In SWITCH, community and parent engagement were enhanced by child health specialists affiliated with local 4-H County Extension offices. These findings may be, in part, due to the SWT representation which comprised mostly classroom and physical education teachers. These results have implications for further study of the relation between implementation and capacity, and the possibility of a bidirectional relation between these constructs. Overall, SWT were able to adapt the intervention to meet the needs of their school setting and stakeholders, demonstrating the adaptability of SWT to mitigate structural barriers in the school environment. Other practices included teaching lessons in other parts of the school curriculum, such as science or social studies, which worked especially when school days were missed due to inclement weather. Many SWT found that the lessons in modules (i.e., classroom and physical education) were too long to implement (~ 20 min) or they didn’t have enough time to plan, therefore modified lessons to fit their schedule or split them up over two content periods.

School-Based Wellness Center Grant Program
Our goal is to support the design, implementation and evaluation of school-based health and wellness education, services and supports for students, educators and other adults working with young people in schools. Both NASBHC and Kaiser Permanente believe that school-based health centers can play a critical role, not only in providing health care services in places where students, staff and teachers spend a majority of their day, but also in championing change from within the school environment so that schools become focal points for encouraging healthy eating and active living behaviors. Employee health and well-being programs are a good way for schools to support staff physical and mental health. In fact, half of those employed in schools are not classroom teachers, and include librarians, teacher aides, special education instructional aides, and a variety of other instructional aides who work directly with students; administrative staff like principals, secretaries and other clerical support staff; health services staff such as guidance counselors, nurses, social workers, psychologists, and speech therapists; and other services staff like food service personnel, custodial, and maintenance and security personnel.10 As NYCPS progresses with decarbonization, energy efficiency and other climate resiliency initiatives, it will continue to develop opportunities Southeast CCBHC Learning Community event for schools to provide programs that build leadership, knowledge, understanding and a sense of community so that students make these important connections in order to contribute to both personal and collective health and wellness.
